F*** up of the year

April 27th, 2007 timlau 5 comments

I spend this week on participating in a RHEL5 system administration couse, very nice couse, nice to get out in corners of administrating a RHEL5 system.

Today it was RHCT exam day, there is 2 test, a one hour troubleshooting test and a two hour installation & configuration test.

The first test was pretty easy.

The second was a little harder, but i completed all the questions in time, i the last question there was a need to modify the root entry in /etc/fstab, and i made a typo, i forgot to reboot the system in the end, so i didn’t catch the problem.

When the instructor reboot the system for grading the boot fail and root was mounted as readonly, so the network wasn’t started so it could not be graded, so the test was failed, what a F*** up.

I have just created a Fedora 7 Test3 LiveUSBon a 1Gb USB stick, here are the steps.

  • su to root.
  • Install ‘syslinux’
    # yum install syslinux
  • Download the script to copy the Fedora Live ISO to a USB stick.
  • Run the script.
    # sh creator-isotostick.sh F-6.92-i386-Live.iso /dev/sdb1
Copying live image to USB stick
    Updating boot config file
    Installing boot loader
USB stick set up as live image!
  • The first parameter is /path/to/iso/file.
  • The second parameter is the USB device.
  • Plug the USB stick in a computer there can boot from USB and try it out.

Apple has announced that they will sell music without DRM. Then the next step should be music in a open format like ogg.
